Common Craft Video - Social Media in Plain English
Video | 03:44 | Seattle, WA

This video from Common Craft uses ice cream as a metaphor to focus on the basics of social media: new technology that makes everyone a producer and tools that give everyone a chance to have a say. A good simple explanation I think.

Lee and Saschi Lefever produced this video in a style they call "paperworks" - like paper dolls they move around with their hands.

And here's Lee's recent thoughtful Blog post about whether all our work here online is reaching anyone in the general public. He muses about whether the tools we use, the jargon we spout, even the hope we have invested in Web 2.0 stuff makes a difference.

"Our challenge, you included, is to remember that our web-based world can become a deceptive echo chamber. We may think we're creating awareness and change, but until our work, our ideas can get outside the chamber and impact people walking around...I fear that we're just talking to ourselves." --Lee Lefever

Me, too.

I think the video is quite wonderful in its content, simplicity, and tone. I, too wonder if we are “talking to ourselves.” I think if we can help our grantees to use Web 2.0 tools to reach their constituents then our efforts will be worthwhile.
