Using Social Networks to Help People Manage Disease: Tu Diabetes

Here’s a great example of the interconnectedness of social networks on the Web: On Twitter yesterday I got news from Amy Sample Ward of an organization called Tu Diabetes thatt is using Twitter to engage people online and help them manage their diabetes, a chronic disease.
Twitter is a free online service that allow people to communicate by posting 140 character messages. It's like a cross between Instant Messaging (IM) and a mini-blog.
Rather than repeat what Amy has written so well about this thoughtful use of social media, I'll just link you to her blog, which is complete with an interview of the Tu Diabetes founder, Manny Hernandez.
I can easily imagine some of our own individual New Routes grantees forming a Twitter group and using it in a similar way to help their communities connect to deal with disease and social issues.
If anyone would like to try out Twitter, feel free to create an account and “Follow” me under the name of “Galedawg.” My Twitter posts, like most people’s, are combinations of personal and work-related entries.
Thanks, Amy.
