Community Event: Our Stories, Our Health + BPSOS Announces a Student Health Ambassadorship Program

On August 14, 2010, the Penn Asian Health Initiatives (PAHI) partnered with Boat People SOS (BPSOS), a refugee-serving national non-profit, to host an exciting event at the University of Pennsylvania's Hall of Flag that celebrated community student achievement and served as a mechanism for PAHI to share our New Routes project, Our Stories, Our Health, with the community.

Centered around the theme of achievement and community service, the event was a celebration for students, family and friends, and community leaders and members. With more than 60+ individuals in attendance, students were recognized for their achievement and their role as bi-lingual and bi-cultural gatekeepers in their communities. PAHI interns presented the Our Stories, Our Health project to all those in attendance and issued out a call for students to join PAHI's Student Health Ambassadorship Program and assist in the implementation of activities relation to Our Stories, Our Health. We recognize that in Asian American communities, these students who are bi-lingual and bi-cultural often serve as the key source of health information for their family. We strive to serve the local community by asking these students to use their skills and relationships with the community to assist in promoting the project, to deliver workshops and overall, to be our liaison to the community. As of today, more than 12 students have sign up as Health Ambassadors.
