Sagal Radio

Sagal Radio, based in metro Atlanta, GA, was founded by East African refugees in 1998 and was granted status as a fully-licensed 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2004. It has become a trusted resource, particularly for “new Americans” from Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Kenya, by providing programming in English, Somali, Swahili and soon in Amharic. Currently broadcast six hours a week, Sagal programs deal with a wide variety of health, social, and educational issues in an effort to empower listeners to overcome the many challenges of adapting to and becoming active members of American society. Broadcasts are also heard worldwide via the internet.

Hussien Mohamed, Sagal Radio’s director and a co-founder, manages the operations and production of HEARMe. A native of Ethiopia who became a U.S. citizen in 1988, Hussien draws upon his own experiences as a refugee to deliver programming that helps the East African refugee community make sense of and build new lives in metro Atlanta. Hussien previously worked for the DeKalb County Board of Health coordinating efforts to document the health issues in the African refugee community and for World Relief as a caseworker assisting families during the resettlement process. He also is a founding member of the Clarkston Community Health Collaborative board of advisors.
