Founded in 2000, Domestic Workers United [DWU] is an organization of Caribbean, Latina and African nannies, housekeepers, and elderly caregivers in New York, organizing for power, respect, fair labor standards and to help build a movement to end exploitation and oppression for all. DWU is a leader in several campaigns including a domestic workers bill of rights for the state of New York.
The California Immigrant Policy Center (CIPC) is an excellent resource for advocacy tools, education and research materials regarding California’s immigrants and their economic, social, and demographic impact on the state and nation. Their research repository contains a selection of compiled briefs and reports pertaining to immigrant rights issues like healthcare and insurance access. The site also hosts a blog.
CAAAELII stands for Coalition of African, Arab, Asian, European, & Latino Immigrants of Illinois. Their mission is to strengthen diverse voices of inter-generational immigrant and refugee communities by building alliances through a transformative process to develop grassroots power that impacts public policy. Their programs include english literacy/civics courses, citizenship and voter training, policy advocacy, and computer technology courses.
CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities (also known as Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence) founded by Asian women in 1986 mobilizes Asian communities to counter anti-Asian violence in the New York City area. CAAAV focuses on institutional violence that affects immigrant, poor and working-class communities such as worker exploitation, concentrated urban poverty, police brutality, Immigration Naturalization Service detention and deportation, and criminalization of youth and workers. CAAAV is a volunteer-driven organization led by members of low-income Asian immigrant communities.
Asian Pacific Fund makes grants in the Bay Area to support essential services and programs for all segments of the Asian American community in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Solano counties. The Fund works with more than 90 affiliate agencies that provide a range of services (including health and human services, and arts and cultural programs) to a diversity of Asian ethnic groups.
The mission of the African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation (AIRF) is to facilitate the effective transition of African immigrants to American society and to support their productive, sustainable integration into their new homeland. AIRF empowers new arrivals with survival skills, mental health services, ESOL classes, job evaluation, preparation and placement. They also provide African Cultural Competency training to their caregivers to enhance intercultural communication.
